SABATINI 20th Anniversary - NZFW Autumn/Winter 2012

  Expert Eye: Sabatini

It was a strong turnout of insiders, family and friends and - being the first official event on the NZFW schedule - there were plenty of TV faces too: Petra Bagust, Kate Hawkesby, Kate Rodger and Colin Mathura-Jeffree (he's the official NZFW ambassador, whatever that means).

Longer lengths may be ruling the international runways, but here the telly babes wore hiked hemlines. The standout of the show was also super short - a little blood red tutu that was a youthful update on the classic 50s dress shape, fitted through the body then flaring wide, but cut Sydney short.

This was a special show for Sabatini, celebrating 20 years of a label that grew into a successful exporter from the Milich family's beginnings with Sonny Elegant Knitwear. Managing director Tony Milich, who started proceedings with a lengthy speech, drew a round of applause in pointing out that the vast bulk of Sabatini's production is still made right here in Mt Roskill.

 Sabatini NZFW 2011
By Petrina Wilson for FashioNZ

Sabatini not only showcased what we can look forward to next autumn/winter but they are also celebrating their 20thbirthday, a huge achievement for any label and it’s very easy to see how this fashion house has continued to shine not only in New Zealand but also in Australia.

Whilst the term knitwear can spark visions of twin sets and cable cardigans there was nothing ordinary about the pieces showcased today. Different knit techniques add texture and dimension, vertical ribbed panelling adds shape and subtle embellishments and leather detail add a “sexy toughness” while still allowing the heart of each garment to shine.

The hues are rich in berries, mauve which combined with the styling of these pieces make this collection very accessible and wearable.

What I love about Sabatini is that they know what they do well and they remain true to it and the only thing I’m frustrated about is that I have to wait until 2012 to have some of these treasures in my wardrobe.
